Along the curving banks of the Scioto, where the river separates Columbus from old Franklinton – the city’s historical predecessor – stands the Center of Science and Industry Museum. The hulking complex opened to the public in 1999, the first of Isozaki’s post-modernist creations in the American Midwest. Circling the grounds is a screen of douglas hawthorns. At the onset of spring, the trees put forth their delicate blooms, lending color to the grey exterior of the museum.
