Photo Journal Part One: El Santuario de Chimayo, a venerable site for Catholic pilgrims in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of New Mexico.
To my (limited) knowledge the US has few sites that fervently draw pilgrims. Many of these in the southwest date to the early days of Spanish exploration and colonization. This one in Chimayo, New Mexico, has drawn generations of American Natives, Hispanics and other devotees, all of whom seek the curative soil of the shrine. El Chimayo is one of the important Heritage Landmarks in the US.
